The state of the old / young mind

I am a photographer who likes very much to share my experiences. Call me an educator, call me a long-winded mother, call me anything, but sharing is my favorite pass time.

Economic structure = art market

Friday, August 29th, 2008

It is sad that in our Asian area, the art market, especially so of photography, does not seem to develop readily. This is indicative of just how developed the money market is. India and China has finally got their due as their country starts to develop into a economic superpower. Their arts are now seeing an insurgence of new talent. In Singapore, where we do have a strong business market, we do not readily see the art grow. Is it because we are small? Is it because our artists are not ready to put in the hard work needed since within our small country, there isn’t much population to talk about competition? Or is it because our arts managers of the country are just not doing it right? (Is it their responsibility?) Or is it because our country has nothing, in terms of dirty, controversial, creative lives, to actually have people that will do work that provoke?

I’ve said so in many of my classes: “You do not need to be suicidal, self-mutilating homosexual, or a murderer to do good art.” Maybe you do…

Japan Part 17

Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

My dearest friends and family.

As it says in her diary, I visited 11 years ago.. my Japanese mom keeps a dairy for each and every day. Both me and my Japanese sister thought we’d met only just at most 8 years ago! It was a real rush of a memory.. everything is still the same. Except for some of the shops outside on the street.

It’s strange that they didn’t remember the earthquake incident, but they remembered how I was teaching them mandarin! haha.. different memories for different people.

Yes, that’s me with the eye-patch.. had some eye infection thing that really got my two doctor friends worried! They kept calling to ask if I was alright and if I needed to be admitted to the hospital. Thank gawd, I didn’t.
