ugly marketing

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

I don’t know about you, but marketing ought to be at least visually coherent.

Had just finished some work and turned on the tv only to have the night race on. I’d just almost forgotten about it. I wonder what’s so exciting about seeing a few cars racing against each other.. much the same as I wonder why people are interested in football. I never quite get it.. but nonetheless, I thought I’d try to give it a chance.

I remember Johnnie Walker, Red Bull, DHL, Bridgestone, Shell, Vodaphone, ING, RBS, etc.. but I must say Singtel has the ugliest aesthetics in their choice of places they choose to put up their logos and just the way they choose to do it! Or maybe it’s just ugly logo. Look, it isn’t about how many times your name appears, but rather, what kind of image is created when your logo is viewed. To me it is, too much of my money is wasted on ugly marketing. Why don’t you put the money in bettering our reception or lowering our charges?

I like, however, the Uniquely Singapore logos. Classy. Noticeable, and made me remember that it was happening in Singapore. Our name has got to be out there!

On a completely different note from marketing… At about 8.40, things started to get interesting, and I suddenly felt some things about why people like this. The spills and thrills; that’s what it is. I was worried if the driver is alive. At the same time, questioning why people would like to see another human being being hurt / killed (think wrestling as well). I guess it’s the strength that people have to STAY alive. It was also when I noticed some dude carrying a beer cup from a high vantage point. Nice.

an early morning call..

yesterday morning.

“Chris, I need you to hold my hands.”

“Daniel Poh, our student, hung himself.”

Let’s send the family some flowers. Isn’t that what we should do, Jason?

I had planned to go for a recee shoot for a small story of mine. The story was the very much hyped F1 in Singapore. How the people who cannot be at the race would feel.. I went out to shoot, anyway.

I started at Golden Mile Shopping Centre. I wanted to start from a distance and get closer. I wanted to see the different ways of being so close yet so far.

Strangely, I found a pool at the Shopping Centre. One that’s no longer in use. One that I’ve never heard of! I’ve been here several times, but I found it only today.

I wondered why it had to be today that I found a pool. I wondered around the pool. Knowing that there is something here that holds me, yet, my mind wonders to my student.

The feeling was heavy.

I stuck around for a few more minute, and left to free myself to focus on the original story I’d wanted to pursue.

I could not.

I went to the wake. In hopes of understand that perhaps, this was all untrue. That perhaps, things were not as gruesome as I’m imagining it.

I could not bare to go near the coffin, to have a last look. I just could not.

I leave the wake wondering about the life that has just ended.

I sent a message to my friend

“Heyo. It’s a nice little funeral. Lots of students. I can’t help but look up toward the sky. Only to catch the many whisp of white clouds and crossing birds. A few sniffles punctuates the air. I see our cut twigs of spring. I have to leave. I’m never very good with people leaving me.”

When do we realize that creativity is worth more money?

We were building our nation based on skills. Cheap skills. Then the standard of living rose, and competition from cheaper countries just kept cost up. Then someone realized that hey! A creative furniture designer, could make so much more money, alone! A creative person who makes a good portable audio device can also make a lot of money.

Ever noticed how people in flip-flops move a lot slower than people in business wear?

One type of rice can feed a hundred different people.

I was just having breakfast and observing the people around me at the coffee shop that I frequent a lot of.

There is the temperamental coffee shop boss. There is the proud cook. The extremely friendly coffee boy, the other very quiet coffee boy. The pushy chicken rice aunty, friendly chicken rice uncle. The Chai Tao Kuey cousins, one dives for fun, the other dives for studies, and has a degree in Geology. THEN, there is weird coffee aunty who sells fish in the day, and works as coffee aunty at night. Just to mention the regular few.

We might all be eating one rice, but there sure are 100s of different people.

Even then, I’m sure when the Chinese Scholar came up with this line, a hundred different people would have been almost unthinkable, but now, a 100 different people seems rather normal.. maybe in our present age, we should call it one type of rice can feed a hundred million different people.

Yeah, and what is this that people keep saying about “You are what you eat?!?”
